'Kids Clay Project - Penguin'

'I made this video for my students to carry out a clay project during remote learning. My kindergarten and first graders got bags of clay to take home so they could make clay penguin sculptures. I kept this video longer format so that students could watch and follow along building basically in real time. The first step was making a pinch pot for the body. I use an inverted pinch pot for the penguin body, then start adding details. I start with the biggest and most obvious details like the beak, eyes etc. Then after it looks more or less like a penguin, I encourage students to think about different accessories they could add to give their sculpture a little personality. Maybe they want to make an emperor penguin with a crown on it\'s head, maybe they want to make a fancy penguin with a top hat and monocle, or a pirate penguin in an eye patch. No matter what unique features and details they would like to add, I encourage students to use simple shapes to sculpt it. Almost every feature I make starts with a little ball of clay or a coil that is then manipulated to get into a cartoonish approximation of the the form.'
