Bald Eagles Mate for Life -bald eagles are usually counted as pairs, this is because they mate for life -they are a lot like a human family is this aspect, they work together building a nest, share the work incubating eagle eggs and  take turns feeding the babies -Bald eagles usually find a mate by age 4 or 5 and are together their whole lives  8. Female are larger than Males -Female bald eagles are physically larger than males which is unusual considering a large majority of animals in the wild sport the larger dominate male -Scientists can’t figure out why, a few speculations are that female take charge of nesting duties, and being larger may help be dominate in doing so. -It could also be just the simple fact a mother eagle will stay with and protect her baby eagles and needs a more intimidating presence. They can also see ultraviolet light.  The bald eagle also has 2 pairs of eyelids, 1 normal pair like humans have and a second one called a nictitating membrane which is a see-through eye lid that keeps the eyes moist, which is kind of needed when you’re flying around all day.  6. -The bald eagle only exists in north america. They’re found predominantly in north america and canada with some population in mexico -there are other bird species that are similar to the bald eagle that exist elsewhere but none that are the same as the bald eagle   5. -Bald eagles don’t make the sounds you hear on tv or in movies -They make not so powerful, chirps and beeps for sounds which get dubbed over for the powerful screech you’re used to hearing in movies  Tristan Findley’s Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RArGl2vkGI  4. -Bald eagles can float and swim -They have large wings and hollow bones allowing them to float very well, this evolutionary adaptation is so they can dive underwater to catch a fish, which often weighs a lot then float or swim their way back to shore to eat the fish  -Once the eagle locks onto it’s prey they can’t unlock their talons until the get to shore where they can stand up, for this reason if the fish is too big for the eagle to handle the fish can potentially drown the eagle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMft3Ny7hFk  3. -They were almost wiped out in the United States when European settlers showed up and started setting up settlements, an act was passed in 1940 to protect them but bald eagles were further wiped out when an insecticide called DDT, you know that stuff that has been linked to numerous types of cancer, was introduced to farmland in the United States. -The numbers of eagle pairs dropped to 471 then DDT was banned in 1970 -Since the ban on DDT there has been a massive recovery for the bald eagle, today there over 9700 eagle pairs in the united states.   2. -They live long lives, the longest living eagle died last year at the age of 38.
