'Patient who has had transplant, they are usually confused on the diet. By and large when you have had a transplant, you are immunosuppressed, that means your body’s immune system is suppressed by medication, which means you are prone for infection. In my opinion, apart from other diet, the most important thing is hygienic diet. Handwashing and food which is cooked well, cooked clean is very important. Water, boiled and purified water we see in transplant patients, they come with diarrhoea, gastroenteritis because we use water which is contaminated or polluted. So clean hygienic food is very important in the diet. then most patients who have had transplant, 50% of who have had kidney failure is diabetes. So they have to avoid sugar. A person who has had a transplant because of the mediation like steroids they put on weight, they become obese. So reducing the fat content, reducing the salt is important an also some of the patients who had transplant, the sugars could be high. So sugar control and the patients who has had a transplant because the appetite improves after transplant, they tend to put on weight. So calorie cut down. So you must consult a dietician. But the most important in my opinion, apart from calories, salt, sugar restrictions, control is hygiene, I repeat hygienic food is the most important because the person who has had a transplant, his immunity is low, we need to see they have a hygienic food.'
